Why it works as a road trip
The three cities sit close enough that each transfer is a half-day rather than a full one, and the road quality between them is among the best in North India. That leaves real sightseeing time on transfer days — Fatehpur Sikri on the Agra–Jaipur leg is the classic example.
What most people get wrong
Trying to do it in three days. Something always gets cut, and it is usually Delhi, which then feels like an airport rather than a city. If you only have three days, skip Delhi deliberately and enjoy Agra and Jaipur properly.

Four-day Golden Triangle itinerary
- Day 1
Delhi
- Morning
- Arrival and Old Delhi — Jama Masjid and the Chandni Chowk lanes.
- Afternoon
- Humayun's Tomb and India Gate drive-past.
- Evening
- Qutub Minar, then overnight in Delhi.
Transport: Private car with driver. — Old Delhi is best explored on foot or by cycle rickshaw; the driver waits nearby.

Delhi to Agra
- Morning
- Depart on the Yamuna Expressway, about 3.5 hours.
- Afternoon
- Agra Fort and a first view of the Taj from Mehtab Bagh.
- Evening
- Overnight in Agra.
Transport: Private car, about 230 km.
- Day 3
Agra to Jaipur
- Morning
- Taj Mahal at sunrise, before the crowds and the haze.
- Afternoon
- Drive to Jaipur with a stop at Fatehpur Sikri or Abhaneri stepwell.
- Evening
- Arrive Jaipur, overnight.
Transport: Private car, about 240 km. — The Taj is closed to tourists on Fridays.

- How many days do you need for the Golden Triangle?
- Four days is the practical minimum and covers each city once. Five or six days lets you see Delhi properly and add Fatehpur Sikri or Abhaneri without a rushed morning.
- What is the driving distance between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur?
- Delhi to Agra is about 230 km on the Yamuna Expressway, roughly 3.5 hours. Agra to Jaipur is about 240 km, roughly 4.5 hours. Jaipur to Delhi is about 280 km, roughly 5 to 6 hours.
- Which direction is best?
- Delhi to Agra to Jaipur is the most common, because it puts the Taj Mahal early and ends in Jaipur where onward Rajasthan travel begins. The reverse works equally well if you fly out of Delhi.
- Can the Golden Triangle be extended into Rajasthan?
- Yes, and it often is. From Jaipur you can continue to Jodhpur, Udaipur or Ranthambore — we plan the two halves as one journey with one vehicle.
- Which vehicle suits this route?
- A sedan for two travellers, an Innova or Hycross for a family of four, a tempo traveller from six people. The expressway sections are fast, so ride comfort matters more than ground clearance here.
