The Golden City and the Thar Desert
Jaisalmer Fort is one of the few living forts in the world, with families, shops and havelis still inside its walls. The city's yellow sandstone turns amber at sunset, which is why it earned the Golden City name.
The desert experience — dunes at Sam or Khuri, camel or jeep safari, a night under the stars — is the reason to build in an extra day rather than treating Jaisalmer as a stopover.

- 2 nights — one for the fort and havelis, one for the desert.
Best time to visit
- November to February. The Desert Festival falls in February. Summer is extreme.
How to reach
- By road from Jodhpur: about 285 km, 4.5–5 hours on a good highway.
- By road from Jaipur: about 560 km — a long day; most itineraries route via Jodhpur or Bikaner.
- By train: the overnight service from Jaipur and Jodhpur is popular.

- Should I drive from Jaipur to Jaisalmer in one day?
- It is possible but it is a 9-hour day on the road. Most travellers break the journey with a night in Jodhpur or Bikaner and arrive fresher.
- Which dunes are better, Sam or Khuri?
- Sam has more camps and more activity; Khuri is quieter and feels more rural. We can arrange transport to either.
