What five days actually allows

Rajasthan is large. Jaipur to Udaipur is 395 km, Jaipur to Jodhpur 335 km, and Jodhpur to Udaipur about 250 km. Those are five to seven hour drives on good roads, which means a five-day trip has to accept either two long transfer days or a smaller geographic area.

The two viable versions of a five-day trip are therefore quite different. The first is the classic three-city route. The second keeps everything within three and a half hours of Jaipur.

Option A: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur

This route gives you the widest contrast Rajasthan offers: a planned grid city, a desert fort city, and a lake city in the hills. The cost is two full mornings and early afternoons in the car.

Day 1 — Jaipur: Amber Fort at opening, Jaigarh, Nahargarh at sunset.
Day 2 — Jaipur: City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Johari Bazaar.
Day 3 — Jodhpur: drive from Jaipur (5.5–6 hours), Mehrangarh in the afternoon.
Day 4 — Udaipur: drive via Ranakpur (about 5 hours), evening boat ride on Lake Pichola.
Day 5 — Udaipur: City Palace and old town, then departure.

Option B: the short-distance version

No drive exceeds three and a half hours, and you gain a tiger safari. What you lose is Udaipur, which is the destination most first-time visitors regret missing.

Day 1 and 2 — Jaipur: forts, walled city, bazaars.
Day 3 — Ranthambore: 3–3.5 hours, afternoon safari.
Day 4 — morning safari, then transfer to Pushkar via Ajmer.
Day 5 — Pushkar ghats and Brahma Temple, return to Jaipur.

Which vehicle to book

For two travellers, a sedan is enough. For a family of four with luggage, an Innova is the sensible minimum given the transfer distances. For six or more, a tempo traveller costs less than two cars and keeps the group together.

On a five-day itinerary you are in the vehicle for roughly twelve to fourteen hours in total. That is where the difference between an economy sedan and a premium MPV becomes noticeable.

Practical notes

Book Amber Fort as your first stop of the trip, at opening time, not in the middle of a day.
Ranakpur Jain temple opens to non-worshipping visitors around midday — plan the Jodhpur to Udaipur leg accordingly.
The last Udaipur day should not include a long excursion if you have an evening flight.
