Why a week changes the trip

The classic Rajasthan circuit is really four places: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur. In five days you can fit three of them. In seven you can fit all four, and the one you gain — Jaisalmer — is also the most distinctive.

Jaisalmer is not simply another fort city. The fort is inhabited, the architecture is sandstone rather than red or white, and the desert begins where the town ends.

Day-by-day

• Day 1 — Jaipur: Amber Fort, Jaigarh, Nahargarh sunset.
• Day 2 — Jaipur: City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, bazaars.
• Day 3 — Jodhpur: 5.5–6 hour drive, Mehrangarh in the afternoon, old town in the evening.
• Day 4 — Jaisalmer: 4.5–5 hour drive, Jaisalmer Fort, sunset at Bada Bagh.
• Day 5 — Desert: Patwon ki Haveli and Kuldhara in the morning, Sam dunes and a camp night.
• Day 6 — Udaipur: the long leg — either a 9 hour drive, a night halt at Jodhpur, or a flight.
• Day 7 — Udaipur: City Palace, old town, boat ride, departure.

Handling the Jaisalmer to Udaipur leg

This is the weak point of every seven-day itinerary. By road it is around 640 km, which is nine hours or more. There are three honest ways to deal with it.

Fly, if the timings work. Route back through Jodhpur and accept a shorter Udaipur stay. Or reverse the trip — Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer — and fly out of Jaisalmer or take the overnight train, which turns the worst leg into a night you were going to spend somewhere anyway.

Desert night: what to expect

• Camps at Sam are busier and more organised; Khuri is quieter and more rural.
• Camel rides are short — typically an hour around sunset — and jeep safaris cover more ground.
• Nights in December and January are genuinely cold. Bring layers even if the days are warm.

Vehicle advice for a week on the road

A seven-day circuit involves roughly 1,600 km of driving. For four passengers, an Innova or Innova Hycross is the practical choice; for six or more, a tempo traveller. For a luxury trip, a GLS, Vellfire or Carnival handles the mixed road surfaces better than a low sedan.
